It was developed as part of the Vision Gran Turismo project, where real-life automakers partner with video game developer Polyphony Digital to create car models for their Gran Turismo driving simulation series. The vehicle was released as downloadable content for Gran Turismo 6 in 2015. While the car's advanced design makes it impossible to functionally create with 2015 technology, the company has discussed creating it a few decades in the future, when technology has caught up with the car's design.
