Termin wywodzi się prawdopodobnie z XVIII wieku. Andachtsbild został dokładnie zdefiniowany przez Panofsky'ego w 1927 roku. Według Panofsky'ego, Andachtsbild ewoluował z dwóch członów: przedstawienia narracyjnego (historia, Historienbild) i przedstawienia reprezentacyjnego (imago, Repräsentationsbild).
