Er ist ein Verkehrsclub mit gemeinnützigem Charakter. Seinen Mitgliedern bietet der VCS Versicherungsdienstleistungen zur Mobilität mit Pannenhilfe und Reiseversicherungen, eine Boutique mit verkehrsbezogenen Artikeln und Angebote als Reisebüro. Die Organisation zählt über 100'000 Mitglieder (Ende 2007 noch rund 115'000) und ist damit nach dem Touring Club Schweiz (TCS) der zweitgrösste Verkehrsverband im Land. Der Verein in 23 Sektionen aufgeteilt, die fast in allen Kantonen und im Fürstentum Liechtenstein präsent sind. Zentralpräsident ist seit 2018 Ruedi Blumer, er folgte auf Evi Allemann.
