Thessalos von Tralleis († spätestens 79), … Thessalos von Tralleis († spätestens 79), latinisiert Thessalus, war ein griechischer Arzt aus Karien. Er lebte und wirkte in Rom und war als Nachfolger Themisons der führende Vertreter der medizinischen Schule der Methodiker. Die wenigen bekannten Tatsachen seines Lebens werden von den ebenfalls in Rom wirkenden Gelehrten Galen und von Plinius dem Älteren überliefert. Thessalos stammte aus Tralleis und verbrachte als Sohn eines wenig begüterten (μοχδηρώς = elend, kummervoll) Vaters die Jugend wollezupfend im Frauenhaus. Trotzdem gelang ihm der Aufstieg zum bekannten und als Praktiker erfolgreichen Arzt. Er richtete einen Brief an Kaiser Nero, in dem er sich rühmte, eine medizinische Schule gegründet zu haben, die alle vorangegangenen übertreffe. Das Gefolge, mit dem er in der Öffentlichkeit auftrat, übertraf das der Schauspieler und Rennfahrer seiner Zeit und sein Grabmal auf der Via Appia ließ er mit der Aufschrift iatronicen („Besieger der Ärzte“, „Sieger unter allen Ärzten“) versehen. Caelius Aurelianus bezeichnet ihn als unus e principibus nostris, also als einen der führenden Ärzte der Methodiker. Er zitiert auch aus zwei Büchern des Thessalos (De regulis, „Über die gesunde Lebensweise“) und erwähnt ein Buch über Chirurgie. Insgesamt nennt er Thessalos aber nicht so häufig wie andere Ärzte der Methodiker, weist ihm auch Behandlungsfehler nach und sogar proterua festinatio (= unverantwortliche Übereilung). Auch Galen spricht sich häufig negativ über Thesallos aus, insbesondere auch über seine Lehrtätigkeit: dass er verspricht, die ärztliche Kunst mehreren Schülern zugleich in sechs Monaten zu vermitteln, empört ihn. Allerdings ist das negative Urteil Galens nicht frei von Berufsneid. Thessalos hat die methodische Schule weiterentwickelt, insbesondere die Trennung der Behandlung der akuten und chronischen Krankheiten. Von den Werken des Thessalos, die auch Galen erwähnt, hat sich nichts erhalten. Nach Caelius Aurelianus wird er auch nicht mehr erwähnt. He lived in Rome, where he was the of Emperor Nero. It was here that he died and was buried, and his tomb was to be seen on the Via Appia. He was from Tralles in Lydia. He was the son of a weaver, and followed the same employment himself in his youth. This, however, he soon gave up, and, though he had a poor general education, he embraced the medical profession, by which he acquired for a time a great reputation, and amassed a large fortune. He adopted the principles of the Methodic school, but modified and developed them. He appears to have exalted himself at the expense of his predecessors; asserting that none of them had contributed to the advance of medical science, and boasting that he himself could teach the art of healing in six months. Galen frequently mentions him, but always in terms of contempt, and is often abusive towards him. He is said to have been later overshadowed by Crinas of Marseilles, who was in turn ousted by his fellow countryman Charmis. He supported a method of treatment that he named metasyncrisis. His object was, in obstinate chronic cases, where other remedies failed, to attempt a thorough change in the fundamental constitution of the organism (syncrisis). He began by the application, for three days, of strong vegetable remedies, both internally and externally, together with which, a strict regimen and emetics were applied. This was the preparation to a system of fasting, which concluded with a course of restoratives. Thessalus regarded the chicory plant to be an herb of the sun. Va ser seguidor de l'escola metòdica de Temisó de Laodicea. Una carta d'ell, segurament apòcrifa, conservada en un tractat d'astrologia i que dona trets biogràfics, diu que Tèssal era un excel·lent astròleg i que coneixia molt bé l'aplicació de les herbes a les malalties. En aquest text, Tèssal practicava la medicina a Alexandria utilitzant els coneixements que donava el llibre Nequepso-Petosiris, una obra que parlava de les vint-i-quatre maneres de tractar el cos humà i curar totes les malalties seguint els signes del zodíac i tractant-los amb pedres i plantes. Va intentar seguir els consells del llibre però no se'n va sortir, i es va convertir en la riota dels altres metges. Va marxar d'Alexandria i va recórrer Egipte, amb la intenció de suïcidar-se si no trobava un bon mètode de curació. Diu el text que la seva ànima li anava dient que aviat tindria un contacte amb els déus, i demanava constantment una visió o una inspiració per portar a terme els seus projectes. Va arribar a Tebes on va trobar un sacerdot egipci que li va proposar conversar amb un mort, o si volia amb la mateixa divinitat. Tèssal va triar parlar amb Asclepi, i després de dejunar tres dies, el sacerdot el va tancar en una habitació subterrània i el va fer seure davant d'un tron on havia d'aparèixer Asclepi. Per fi va aparèixer el déu, i Tèssal li va preguntar perquè no havia tingut èxit amb les fórmules que donava el llibre de Petosiris. Asclepi va contestar que l'antic egipci no sabia en quin moment s'havien de collir les plantes i li va dictar un tractat (Sobre les plantes sotmeses als dotze signes del zodíac i al set planetes), amb el qual va fer-se famós com a metge. Tèssal també va preguntar a Asclepi si hi havia alguna planta que donés la immortalitat, i el déu li va respondre que moltes, però que no era bo que l'home les conegués.
