Around 475 St. Genevieve purchased some land and built Saint-Denys de la Chapelle. In 636 on the orders of Dagobert I the relics of Saint Denis, a patron saint of France, were reinterred in the basilica. The existing church, completed in 1204, was built on the foundations of a chapel established by Saint Genevieve in 475, which housed the relics of Saint Denis until 636, when they were transferred to the Basilica of Saint-Denis. A legend states that Joan of Arc spent a night of prayer in the chapel in 1429.
