Die BB 12000 war die erste französische Se … Die BB 12000 war die erste französische Serien-Elektrolokomotivbaureihe für das Wechselstromsystem 25 kV/50 Hz. Alle vorherigen französischen Elektrolokomotiven waren mit Gleichstrom betrieben worden. Nach Experimenten auf einer mit Industriestrom von 50 Hz im Département Haute-Savoie betriebenen Strecke wurden ab 1954 148 Exemplare dieser Reihe gebaut. Zusammen mit den Reihen , und CC 14100 gehört die Reihe damit zur ersten Generation von Wechselstromlokomotiven in Frankreich. Ihr erstes Einsatzgebiet war die 303 km lange Strecke von Thionville nach Valenciennes. Die positiven Erfahrungen, die man hier machte, führten zu der Entscheidung, alle zukünftigen Bahnelektrifizierungen mit Ausnahme von Erweiterungen des bestehenden Gleichstromnetzes mit Wechselstrom durchzuführen. In der Folge erweiterte sich das Einsatzgebiet der Loks auf den gesamten Nordosten, mit dem Eintreffen der BB 16500 und vor allem der wurden sie jedoch in untergeordnete Dienste verdrängt. Die letzten Maschinen dieser Reihe wurden im Januar 2000 ausgemustert, allerdings sind mehrere Exemplare erhalten geblieben.
