Elle fut occupée jusqu'à la fin de l'Empire romain et son caractère exceptionnel est lié aux riches marbres exhumés lors des fouilles qui s'y sont succédé, depuis les premières découvertes au XVIIe siècle et surtout depuis les fouilles menées par Alexandre Du Mège de 1826 à 1830. Par son importance elle constituait selon certains archéologues du site, dont Léon Joulin, la villa la plus importante d'Europe après la Villa Hadriana. Les éléments sculptés découverts, d'une importance majeure, ornent désormais le Musée Saint-Raymond de Toulouse, qui possède grâce à ceux-ci la collection la plus importante de France de bustes d'empereurs romains, après celle du Musée du Louvre. Des copies des œuvres découvertes ont été placées dans un musée dans la commune de sa découverte. Il s'agit du musée archéologique de Martres-Tolosane, implanté dans un donjon médiéval du début du XIIIe siècle sur le tour de ville. Gli edifici occupano uno spazio di 16 ettari e comprendevano sia quelli legati alla produzione agricola di un latifondo, sia la residenza del proprietario, con un portico monumentale, numerose aree a giardino e delle terme private. Gli ambienti residenziali erano decorati con rilievi in marmo che raffigurano le fatiche di Ercole, datati al III secolo, o clipei (scudi) con immagini di divinità. Erano inoltre presenti numerose statue, copie di originali greci realizzati a Roma, e una galleria di ritratti di imperatori e di altri personaggi. Le sculture sono oggi conservate nel Museo Saint-Raymond di Tolosa. Sono inoltre presenti decorazioni con girali d'acanto alle quali si mescolano piccoli animali. The villa was located on the banks of the river Garonne, on the road to Toulouse and was occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries. The buildings spread over an area of 16 hectares and consisted of both the agricultural buildings of a latifundium and the owner's residence, with a monumental portico, numerous garden areas and private baths. The residential areas were decorated with marble reliefs depicting the Labours of Hercules, dated to the 3rd century, or with clipei (shields) with images of deities. There were also numerous statues, copies of Greek originals made in Rome, and a gallery of portraits of emperors and other personalities. The sculptures are now in the Saint-Raymond Museum in Toulouse. There were also decorations with acanthus swirls mixed with small animals.
