Segons el Domesday Book (1086), al final del segle xi, el primer titular del comtat fou Alan el Roig, fill segon d'Eudes de Penthièvre, havent rebut el "honor" (les terres en feu) de Guillem el Conqueridor en recompensa per la seva participació en la conquesta d'Anglaterra.
