Como mayólogo investigó la civilización maya precolombina de Mesoamérica. A pesar de su corta edad se hizo notar por sus estudios sobre los sistemas de la escritura maya y por sus trabajos arqueológicos en diversos yacimientos mayas. Sus análisis de la onomástica maya en el periodo clásico mesoamericano fue una de las primeras publicaciones sobre el tema. Colas también llevó a cabo estudios etnográficos y diversas encuestas en comunidades mayas contemporáneas de Belice. Organizó en Europa conferencias de carácter académico para dar a conocer el resultado de sus investigaciones, organizando asimismo talleres para discutir asuntos relativos a la cultura maya. Desde 2006, al cumplir 30 años de edad Colas fue nombrado profesor asistente en el departamento de antropología de la Universidad de Vanderbilt, en Nashville (Tennessee), Estados Unidos. His analysis of onomastics—personal naming practices and titles of rank—in Classic-era Maya inscriptions was the first major publication of its kind. Colas also conducted ethnographic studies and surveys among contemporary Maya communities living in Belize. In Europe, he had close involvement with the organisation of academic conferences and workshops on the Maya, as a workshop tutor, presenter of original papers, and editor of several conference proceedings and reports. Since 2006 Colas held a position as assistant professor in the Anthropology Department of the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.
