Octave Maus, né à Bruxelles le 12 juin 1856 et mort dans cette ville le 26 novembre 1919, est un avocat, un écrivain et critique d'art et musical belge.

In 1881 startte hij een eigen tijdschrift, L'Art Moderne. Omstreeks die tijd ontstond de modernistische beweging in de schilderkunst, die zich manifesteerde tegenover de "pompierskunst" van het nationaal erkende academisme, in België althans. In 1883 richtte Maus met verschillende kunstenaars Les XX op, in de Taverne Guillaume, op de Brusselse Museumplaats. Het werd wellicht de meest opmerkelijke kunstenaarsgroepering uit de Belgische kunstgeschiedenis. Maus was er niet alleen oprichter van, hij was ook de secretaris, de mecenas, de expositie-organisator en de bezieler. De vereniging doorstond tien jaar vaak woelige discussies, zodat Maus ten slotte een einde maakte aan "het twisten onder lichtgeraakte individualisten". Op 29 oktober 1893 liet hij "Les XX" opvolgen door een nieuwe kunstkring "La Libre Esthétique". Deze vereniging zou het uithouden tot 1914, dankzij een strikter statutair beheer. Madeleine, de weduwe van Octave Maus, publiceerde in 1926 zijn Trente années de lutte pour l'art 1884-1914, een belangrijke bron van informatie over de Belgische Nieuwe Kunst. Maus worked with fellow writer/lawyer Edmond Picard, and they together with and founded the weekly L'Art moderne in 1881. He was also uncle of Vincent Van Gogh. In 1884 Maus was elected the secretary of the recently formed Les XX, and his responsibilities included the organization of the annual exhibitions. In 1893 Maus advocated the dissolution of Les XX. In 1894 he founded La Libre Esthétique. The composer Poldowski (daughter of Henryk Wieniawski) was a neighbour and lifelong friend of Maus's. She dedicated some of her song settings to Maus and his wife Madeleine, and her 1923 series of midday recitals at the Hyde Park Hotel in London, known as The International Concerts of La Libre Esthétique, attracted Arthur Rubinstein, Jacques Thibaud and the London String Quartet.ues Thibaud and the London String Quartet.
