A gravação ocorreu em alguns dos shows da turnê intitulada Liza, que consistiu em 24 shows realizados no teatro Winter Garden, localizado no número 1634 no centro de Manhattan, Nova Iorque. A direção do espetáculo coube a Bob Fosse, que a dirigiu no filme Cabaret, de 1972, pelo qual ela foi reconhecida com o prêmio Óscar, na categoria de melhor atriz. Colaborando com Fossi, nas coreografias, estava Ron Lewis. Marvin Hamlisch foi o diretor musical e a dupla de compositores John Kander e Fred Ebb contribuiu com canções inéditas. Por conflitos contratuais, foi retirado de circulação pouco tempo depois, porque tinha músicas de Cabaret, e a trilha sonora do filme ainda estava no mercado, tornado-se um título raro - dado como perdido - na discografia de Liza. A recepção da crítica especializada foi favorável. William Ruhlmann, do site americano AllMusic, avaliou com três estrelas e meia de cinco. Comercialmente, passou quatro semanas na tabela de álbuns mais vendidos, Billboard 200.
