Die Rote Liste der gefährdeter Arten der International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) listet im Dezember 2022 aber nur 9032 Arten auf, von denen immerhin in der Neuzeit, also seit dem Jahr 1500, schon 297 Arten als ausgestorben gelten ( – Extinct), 16 Arten als in der Wildnis ausgestorben ( – Extinct in the Wild) und 725 weitere Arten als kritisch bedroht ( – Critically Endangered), davon 153 kritisch bedroht, möglicherweise ausgestorben ( (PE) – Critically Endangered, Possible Extinct). 607 Arten gelten als gefährdet ( – Endangered). Bei 2235 dieser 9032 Arten lautet der Gefährdungsstatus allerdings „zu wenig Daten vorhanden“ ( – Data Deficient) (Stand 13. Dezember 2022). Bei den allermeisten Weichtierarten ist der Gefährdungsstatus von der IUCN somit noch nicht ausreichend untersucht worden, weswegen man davon ausgehen kann, dass wesentlich mehr als diese 297 Arten ausgestorben sind. Sicher ist, dass die Weichtiere von der neuzeitlichen Aussterbewelle am meisten betroffen sind. Weit über 1000 Arten sind in den letzten 500 Jahren entweder schon ausgestorben oder zumindest verschollen, was man auch in einschlägigen wissenschaftlichen Malakologie-Publikationen nachlesen kann, die sich mit dieser Thematik beschäftigen. Alleine auf Hawaii gibt es über 300 Arten, die im letzten Jahrhundert ausgestorben sein dürften. Da Weichtiere in den allermeisten Fällen recht klein sind, erscheint es auch logisch, dass man den Gefährdungsstatus wesentlich schwerer beurteilen kann als bei großen Tieren wie zum Beispiel einem Elefanten. Viele Weichtiere haben aber einen entscheidenden Vorteil gegenüber anderen kleinen Tieren in der Beurteilung ihres Gefährdungsstatus, nämlich ihre Schale. Diese kann man auch noch Jahre später finden und darauf rückschließen, wann die Art ausgestorben sein dürfte (was zum Beispiel bei Insekten wesentlich schwerer zu beurteilen ist, weil in der Regel schon nach wenigen Wochen nichts mehr von einem toten Insekt übrig geblieben ist). Trotzdem ist die IUCN sehr vorsichtig mit der Einschätzung, ob eine Weichtierart ausgestorben ist oder nicht.Zum Beispiel ist die auf Teneriffa lebende Schüsselschnecken-Art nur vom Holotyp aus dem Jahr 1852 bekannt, trotzdem ist ihr IUCN-Gefährdungsstatus (PE), also Critically Endangered (Possible Extinct) und nicht endgültig Extinct.Auch die auf der Insel Bora Bora beheimatete Landlungenschnecken-Art ist laut IUCN seit den 1880er-Jahren nicht mehr gesichtet worden, trotzdem ist ihr Gefährdungsstatus ohne Angabe von Gründen nur , also Critically Endangered, obwohl sie danach nie mehr gesichtet worden ist.Die auf der Insel Rapa Iti lebende Landlungenschnecke hat laut IUCN ohne Angabe von Gründen lediglich den Gefährdungsstatus – Endangered (also gefährdet), wurde aber im Jahr 1934 zuletzt gesichtet.Erstaunlich ist die Einschätzung bei der aus Vietnam stammenden Flussmuschel-Art , welche laut IUCN seit mittlerweile fast 40 Jahren nicht mehr gesichtet worden ist. Ihr Gefährdungsstatus ist trotzdem nur verletzlich ( – Vulnerable, den drittbesten Gefährdungsstatus, den die IUCN vergibt), obwohl ihr Verbreitungsgebiet etwa 20 Quadratkilometer hat und ihr Lebensraum durch Wasserverschmutzung, Entwaldung und Bergbau bedroht ist.Dass die IUCN mit dieser Vorsichtigkeit nicht falsch liegt, zeigt das Beispiel der kroatischen Wasserdeckelschnecken-Art . Von ihr wurde angenommen, dass die Art nur von subfossilen Muscheln bekannt ist (deren Alter also im Grenzbereich zwischen fossil und rezent liegt, daher war auch kein Datum der letzten Sichtung bekannt). Trotzdem schätzte die IUCN ihren Gefährdungsstatus nur als (PE) ein (also kritisch bedroht, möglicherweise ausgestorben). Tatsächlich konnten am 29. Juni 2014 ein paar Exemplare gefunden werden. Allerdings steht im IUCN-Artikel von dieser Entdeckung noch nichts.Ein weiteres Beispiel für die (durchaus sinnvolle) Vorsichtigkeit der IUCN ist die auf Gran Canaria lebende Schnirkelschnecken-Art , welche laut IUCN spätestens im Jahr 1932 zuletzt gesichtet worden ist. Ihr Gefährdungsstatus lautet „zu wenig Daten vorhanden“ ( – Data Deficient). (ebenso bei der in Algerien beheimateten Wasserdeckelschnecke , welche laut IUCN ebenfalls den Gefährdungsstatus hat, obwohl sie seit dem Jahr 1870 nicht mehr gesichtet worden ist.)Die IUCN liegt aber auch hie und da falsch, wie zum Beispiel bei der US-amerikanischen Flussmuschel , welche unter diesem Namen als ausgestorben gilt, mittlerweile aber zur Art synonymisiert wurde und in großen Teilen Nordamerikas heimisch ist und dessen IUCN-Gefährdungsstatus unter diesem Namen – Least Concern (also nicht gefährdet) ist.Auch bei der in der Nähe von Shanghai vorkommenden Strandschnecke irrt sich die IUCN, welche dieser Art ohne Angabe von Gründen den Gefährdungsstatus – Extinct zuteilt, obwohl die Art um das Jahr 2015 wiederentdeckt wurde (vielleicht, weil sie vorher im Jahr 1855 zuletzt gesichtet wurde). Allerdings läuft die Art schon wieder Gefahr, erst recht, diesmal aber endgültig (?), auszusterben.Ebenfalls für ausgestorben hält die IUCN die Arten Leptoxis compacta (im Jahr 1933 oder 1935 das vorletzte Mal gesichtet, 2011 wiederentdeckt), (1997 wiederentdeckt), (in den 1870er-Jahren das vorletzte Mal gesichtet, 2003 wiederentdeckt) oder (1878 das vorletzte Mal gesichtet, 2002 wiederentdeckt).Von der auf den Gesellschaftsinseln heimischen Baumschnecke behauptet die IUCN, dass die Art nur in freier Wildbahn ausgestorben ist ( – Extinct in the Wild). Tatsächlich aber starb das letzte Exemplar am 21. Februar 2016 im Edinburgh Zoo. Es gibt noch einige weitere interessante Beispiele, bei denen sich die IUCN nachweislich irrt (weitere IUCN-Irrtümer in Bezug auf ausgestorben oder nicht ausgestorben kann man auf der Diskussionsseite dieses Artikels nachlesen).
