Ο Γιόχαν Μίκαελ Χαϊνέκιους έγινε πάστορας στον ναό της «Παναγίας της Αγοράς» (Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen, σήμερα γνωστή απλώς ως η Marktkirche) στο Χάλε, όπου είχε καθήκον να εποπτεύει τη μουσική και χορωδία του ναού, και να γράφει στίχους για εκκλησιαστικές καντάτες. Ωστόσο επεκτάθηκε συστηματικά σε άλλες ασχολίες, για τις οποίες είναι πιο γνωστός: Μελέτησε ιδιαιτέρως την ελληνική ορθοδοξία της εποχής του και το 1711 κυκλοφόρησε σχετικό βιβλίο του υπό τον τίτλο Πραγματική και αληθής περιγραφή της Παλαιάς και Νέας Ελληνικής Εκκλησίας, κατά την ιστορίαν της, την διδασκαλίαν της πίστεώς της και τα εκκλησιαστικά έθη.
