Ya que en Colombia las armas son ilegales, Indumil por lo tanto, tiene el monopolio de fabricar y comercializar armas, municiones y explosivos no solo para las agencias del gobierno como policía y ejército, si no también en la minería, la seguridad, la infraestructura vial y la construcción. Indumil cuenta con una sede de negocios en Bogotá y tres plantas de fabricación; 2 en Cundinamarca y 1 en Boyacá. A pesar de ser una subsidiaria del estado colombiano, funciona de manera independiente y ha expandido su negocio en Centroamérica, el Caribe, Medio Oriente y África. Debido al conflicto armado interno de Colombia, Indumil ha desarrollado tecnología para el desminado , eso le ha permitido llevar sus productos a varios países como Angola y Camboya. En 2016, las ventas de Indumil en el exterior llegaron a COLP 9,2 mil millones, ya en el 2019 llegaron a un pico histórico con 75,9 mil millones, su astronómico ascenso se debió a varios factores, principalmente, a una alianza con las fuerzas militares de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos que, para ese entonces, intensificaba su lucha contra el Estado Islámico en países vecinos como Yemen, Irak y Siria, otros factores incluyen la venta de armas en los conflictos en Centroamérica. Con el tratado de Paz en Colombia y la llegada del Coronavirus Indumil se ha enfocado en la venta de otros productos y servicios, en 2020 anunció la fabricación temporal de camas y muebles hospitalarios, y empezó a ensamblar los respiradores artificiales desarrollados por la Universidad del Rosario. Con su lema; mucho más que armas, municiones y explosivos la empresa ha estado presente en la construcción de hidroeléctricas, túneles (por ejemplo, Túnel de la Línea), carreteras y minería. Indumil ha sido contratista de empresas como Cerrejón y Drummond, y en vías 4G, en gran medida por tener el monopolio de la fabricación de explosivos.
