Die Geschichte der Berliner U-Bahn nahm ih … Die Geschichte der Berliner U-Bahn nahm ihren Ursprung 1880 mit einer Anregung des Unternehmers Werner Siemens, in Berlin eine Hoch- und Untergrundbahn zu bauen. In den neun Jahren nach Gründung des Deutschen Kaiserreiches war die Einwohnerzahl von Berlin um über ein Drittel angestiegen, was zunehmende Verkehrsprobleme verursachte. Anfang 1896 begann daraufhin Siemens & Halske mit dem Bau der ersten Strecke als Hochbahn. Am 1. April 1897 wurde die Gesellschaft für elektrische Hoch- und Untergrundbahnen in Berlin (Hochbahngesellschaft) gegründet, die den weiteren Bau und Betrieb übernahm und 1929 in der Berliner Verkehrs-AG aufging. Das 1938 in Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) umfirmierte Unternehmen wurde Eigenbetrieb der Stadt Berlin. Die BVG ist seit 1994 eine Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts. Als erste Linie eröffnete die Hochbahngesellschaft am 18. Februar 1902 die Strecke zwischen Stralauer Thor und Potsdamer Platz (weitgehend die heutige Linie U1). Bereits am 15. Februar war die „Ministerfahrt“ auf der Strecke Potsdamer Platz–Zoologischer Garten–Stralauer Tor–Potsdamer Platz vorausgegangen, im Fahrgastverkehr war der Zoologische Garten aber erst ab dem 11. März erreichbar. Bis 1913 wurden vier weitere Strecken ausgeführt, ehe der Erste Weltkrieg und die in der Weimarer Republik folgende Hyperinflation zunächst den weiteren Ausbau verhinderten. Erst 1923 wurde wieder eine neue U-Bahn-Linie eingeweiht, die mit dem neu eingeführten Großprofil breitere Wagen besaß. Von 1923 bis 1931 wurden dann neue Strecken dieses Typs dem Fahrbetrieb übergeben, auch im Kleinprofil gab es noch Neueröffnungen. In der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wurden keine weiteren Bahnhöfe gebaut. Der Zweite Weltkrieg richtete im Netz der Berliner U-Bahn große Schäden an: die Luftangriffe der Alliierten zerstörten viele Stationen und gegen Ende der Schlacht um Berlin Anfang Mai 1945 wurden mit der Sprengung des Nord-Süd-Tunnels der S-Bahn neben diesem auch weite Streckenabschnitte der U-Bahn überflutet. Der Wiederaufbau des vor dem Krieg bestehenden Netzes war erst 1950 abgeschlossen. Der Bau der Berliner Mauer im August 1961 brachte neue Einschränkungen: die beiden U-Bahn-Linien C (ab 1966: Linie 6) und D (Linie 8) fuhren fortan ohne Halt durch die zu Geisterbahnhöfen gewordenen Stationen der beiden Ost-Berliner Tunnelstrecken – Ausnahme war der zum Grenzübergang ausgebaute Bahnhof Friedrichstraße (siehe auch: Tränenpalast). Die Bahnhöfe Warschauer Straße und Potsdamer Platz wurden stillgelegt. Während der U-Bahn-Bau auf West-Berliner Gebiet durch den S-Bahn-Boykott weiter voranschritt, gab es in Ost-Berlin einen Quasi-Baustopp. Lediglich der Bahnhof Tierpark (Linie E) eröffnete 1973 neu. Von 1985 bis 1989 wurde die Linie E (heute: U5) ab Tierpark oberirdisch bis Hönow verlängert. Schon zwei Tage nach dem Mauerfall konnte am 11. November 1989 der erste ehemalige Geisterbahnhof Jannowitzbrücke als Grenzübergangsstelle wiedereröffnet werden. Am 22. Dezember folgte die Station Rosenthaler Platz, am 12. April der nur von West-Berlin aus zugängliche Bahnhof Bernauer Straße, alle an der U8 gelegen. Am 1. Juli 1990 wurden schließlich auch alle anderen früheren Geisterbahnhöfe der U-Bahn wiedereröffnet. Nun war vor allem die Zusammenführung der Netze das Ziel. 1993 konnte die Linie U2 von Vinetastraße nach Ruhleben wieder durchfahren, seit 1995 fährt die Linie U1 wieder von Kreuzberg über die Oberbaumbrücke nach Friedrichshain zum Bahnhof Warschauer Straße. Danach wurden nur noch die an der Linie U2 gelegene Station Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park (Oktober 1998) und der kurze Abschnitt von Vinetastraße nach Pankow (September 2000) neu eröffnet. Wegen der angespannten Haushaltslage der Stadt Berlin stagniert seitdem der weitere Ausbau. Im Hauptstadtvertrag war eine Verlängerung der U5 vom Alexanderplatz nach Westen durch das Regierungsviertel vorgesehen, die 2009 zur Eröffnung der Linie U55 und 2020 zur Eröffnung der neuen Strecke über das Rote Rathaus und Unter den Linden führte. Der U-Bahn-Ausbau wird allgemein in drei Entwicklungsphasen unterteilt: 1.

During the nine years after the German Empire was founded, the city's population grew by over one-third and traffic problems increased. In 1896, Siemens & Halske began to construct the first stretch of overhead railway. On 1 April 1897, the company began construction of an electric underground railway. The Berliner Verkehrs Aktiengesellschaft (BVG) was formed in 1928, and took over further construction and operation of the network. In 1938, the company was renamed Berlin Transport Company; the original acronym, however, remained. Since 1994, the BVG has been a public company. The line between Stralauer Tor and Potsdamer Platz (the present-day U1 line) was the first to open, on 18 February 1902. Four additional lines were built before the First World War. In the Weimar Republic, hyperinflation initially prevented further expansion of the system. A new line with a wider car, known as Großprofil, opened in 1923. No stations were built during the Nazi era, and many were destroyed in air raids during the Second World War. Near the end of the Battle of Berlin in early May 1945, the north-south tunnel was demolished and broad sections of the subway flooded; reconstruction of the prewar system lasted until 1950. Construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961 introduced restrictions. Lines C (the present-day U6) and D (U8) ran through tunnels and stations in East Berlin without stopping, except for the border crossing at Friedrichstraße station. The Warschauer Straße and Potsdamer Platz stations were decommissioned. Although U-Bahn construction continued in West Berlin, the Line E Tierpark station was the only one to open in East Berlin (in 1973). From 1985 to 1989, Line E (U5) was extended from Tierpark to Hönow. On 11 November 1989, two days after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first formerly-closed station (Jannowitzbrücke) was reopened as a border crossing. Rosenthaler Platz followed on 22 December, and Bernauer Straße on 12 April 1990. All three stations are on the U8 line. On 1 July 1990, all remaining ghost stations were reopened. With the reunification of the system, U2 reopened in 1993. In 1995, the U1 was reinstated from Kreuzberg via the Oberbaumbrücke to Friedrichshain at Warschauer Straße station. The U2 Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park station opened in October 1998, and a short portion from Vinetastraße to Pankow opened in September 2000. The Berlin U-Bahn originated in 1880 with … The Berlin U-Bahn originated in 1880 with Werner Siemens' idea to build an urban railway in Berlin. During the nine years after the German Empire was founded, the city's population grew by over one-third and traffic problems increased. In 1896, Siemens & Halske began to construct the first stretch of overhead railway. On 1 April 1897, the company began construction of an electric underground railway. The Berliner Verkehrs Aktiengesellschaft (BVG) was formed in 1928, and took over further construction and operation of the network.
