En el 2006 se crea la Fundación Gerardo Chávez; ha contribuido a desarrollar el ambiente cultural de la ciudad de Trujillo, a través del Museo del Juguete inaugurado en el año 2001 y el Museo de Arte Moderno de Trujillo. Es uno de los sucesores directos del Grupo Norte que surgiera en la ciudad de Trujillo en la primera mitad del siglo XX. En el año 2012 se le reconoció como el artista plástico peruano en actividad más importante.
