The Dresden Heath (German: Dresdner Heide) … The Dresden Heath (German: Dresdner Heide) is a large forest in the city of Dresden, Germany. The heath is the most important recreation area in the city and is also actively forested. Approximately 6,133 hectares of the Dresden Heath are designated as a nature preserve, making it one of the largest municipal forests in Germany by area. Das Waldgebiet markiert in seiner Geologie und in der Pflanzen- und Tierwelt einen Übergangsraum zwischen dem Norddeutschen Tiefland und den Mittelgebirgen. Es wird bis auf kleine Flächen dem Westlausitzer Hügel- und Bergland zugeordnet und stellt damit einen der westlichsten Ausläufer der Sudeten dar. Während der felsige Untergrund des Waldes im Laufe der schollentektonischen Bildung des Elbtalkessels, den die Dresdner Heide nördlich flankiert, angehoben wurde, ist der Mischwald großflächig durch dünenartige Sandablagerungen der Saale- und Elster-Kaltzeit geprägt.
