Doktorandus (di Belanda dan masa Hindia Be … Doktorandus (di Belanda dan masa Hindia Belanda doctorandus) atau disingkat Drs., dan Doktoranda (doctoranda) disingkat Dra. bagi wanita, merupakan gelar yang diberikan oleh universitas. Kata "Doktorandus/Doktoranda" merupakan kata serapan dari bahasa Belanda yang memungutnya dari bahasa Latin yang berarti "Ia yang akan dijadikan ilmuwan (doktor)". Karena itu di Belanda gelar ini diberikan kepada orang yang sudah menyelesaikan program Master (S-2), dan hampir mencapai gelar doktor, yaitu gelar tertinggi dalam bidang akademis. Si pemilik gelar hanya tinggal menulis disertasi untuk mencapai gelar doktornya. Sampai dengan tahun 1960-an di dalam ijazah Doktorandus yang dikeluarkan Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) untuk ilmu sains (matematika, fisika, kimia, biologi, farmasi, kedokteran, astronomi, ilmu kebumian, geologi geofisika) dan seni rupa tercantum kalimat "pemegang ijazah ini berhak mencapai gelar doktor dengan membuat dan mempertahankan thesis".:155 Dengan adanya peningkatan kebutuhan akan sarjana pada periode tahun 1950-1960-an, di sisi lain produktivitas universitas dan perguruan tinggi Indonesia saat itu masih rendah, maka diambil kebijakan memperpendek masa studi sarjana dari 5-5,5 tahun menjadi 4-4,5 tahun. Faktor lainnya adalah semakin banyak sarjana Indonesia yang meneruskan pendidikannya di AS/Inggris tetap harus melalui program "M.Sc." sebelum dapat mengambil gelar doktornya, karena pola pendidikan Amerika Serikat dan Inggris menganut penjenjangan B.Sc. (3-4 tahun) - M.Sc. (2 tahun) - Ph.D. (3-4 tahun), sementara pola pendidikan di Belanda/Belgia/Jerman menganut penjenjangan Drs/Ir/Dipl.Ing (5-5,5 tahun) - Dr/Dr.Ing. (3-4 tahun). Dalam ijazah yang dikeluarkan ITB setelah tahun 1970-an sebenarnya tidak lagi tercantum gelar "Doktorandus" atau "Insinyur" melainkan "Sarjana", namun karena Doktorandus/Insinyur terlanjur memasyarakat, nomenklatur itu masih tetap digunakan hingga tahun 1990-an walaupun dengan masa studi dan level yang tidak lagi sama dengan era sebelum 1960-an. Gelar doktorandus/doktoranda ini sampai tahun 1990 diberikan bagi lulusan program S-1 dalam Ilmu Sosial, matematika dan ilmu pengetahuan alam, seni, ilmu pedagogi atau pendidikan. Some students will continue to do research under the supervision of a professor, which eventually allows them to obtain the title of doctor. In Dutch, the words doctoraal and doctoraat have different meanings, the first referring to the doctorandus, the second word referring to the doctorate phase or title. The word 'doctorandus' is based on the traditional principle that this degree is a prerequisite and intermediate step for obtaining a doctorate title. However, in the twentieth century the doctorandi have become considered to be graduates and when they can choose a scientific career, they do so usually as a paid and not as research students.
