He won election in the 2014 municipal election, over former mayor Sharon Shepherd. Basran graduated from the Broadcast Journalism program at BCIT and worked as a television journalist for CHBC-TV from 2002 to 2007, before leaving the station to go into business as a realtor. He was first elected to Kelowna City Council as a city councillor in the 2011 municipal election. Basran was elected Mayor in 2014, and was elected aganin in 2018, making Basran the youngest elected mayor of Kelowna. Basran's father is of Indian descent, and his mother and wife are of European descent.s mother and wife are of European descent.
