He was a journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times in the 1960s and for WBBM Channel 2 TV in Chicago in the 1970s, where he earned an Emmy for a documentary on the 1968 Democratic Convention. He founded, co-founded and edited several publications, including the , the Chicago Free Press, the Daily Planet, and the online North Avenue Magazine.
