Robert C. Bushnell (1926 – January 31, 201 … Robert C. Bushnell (1926 – January 31, 2016) was an American bass player and guitarist who has appeared on dozens of albums and singles as a studio musician, including Bobby Lewis's hit "Tossin' and Turnin'" (1961), "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels (1963), "Under the Boardwalk" by The Drifters (1964) and the remixed hit version of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" (1965). Bushnell was born in West Philadelphia and attended Sulzberger Junior High School where he first learned how to play bass fiddle. He graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1945 and left for New York City shortly thereafter. He played occasionally with Jimmy Heath's band in the late 1940s, coinciding with John Coltrane. He played in the first house band at Philadelphia's Club 421, a lineup led by Charlie Rice, and featuring Vance Wilson, Red Garland, and Johnny Hughes. He went on to become a member of Louis Jordan's bands (both the Orchestra and his Tympany Five). In 1952, he married the band's vocalist, Elaine Dash Robinson, with whom he later formed a group.binson, with whom he later formed a group.

In den beiden folgenden Jahrzehnten arbeitete er als Studiomusiker u. a. mit King Curtis, Haywood Henry, Earl Warren, Seldon Powell, Bill Doggett, Etta Jones, Solomon Burke, Jimmy Smith, Stan Getz, Don Covay, Cal Tjader, Johnny Hodges, Gary McFarland, Esther Phillips, Bernard Purdie, Big Joe Turner, Willis Jackson, Jimmy Rushing, Jimmy McGriff, Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Gene Ammons und Archie Shepp. 1966 wirkte er mit Al Gorgoni (E-Gitarre) und Bobby Gregg (Schlagzeug) an der Einleitung von Bob Dylans Klassiker „Like a Rolling Stone“ mit, die im Overdub-Verfahren entstand. In gleicher Besetzung wirkte er im Anschluss bei der Überarbeitung der zweiten Fassung von The Sound of Silence von Simon and Garfunkel mit. Zu hören ist er auch auf Plattenaufnahmen von Elmore James, Mickey & Silvia, The Drifters („Up on the Roof“, 1962), Tim Hardin (1966), Van Morrison (T.B. Sheets, 1967) und Nina Simone (Sings the Blues, 1967) In den 70ern war Bushnell noch an Plattenaufnahmen von Houston Person und Sam Wooding beteiligt; 1974 trat er bei einem Tributkonzert zu Ehren von John Kirby mit Sy Oliver, Cliff Smalls, Charlie Persip und Maxine Sullivan in der New Yorker Carnegie Hall auf.
