Einen Teil seiner Aufgaben für den lokalen Verkehr verlor er 1939, als der nahegelegene unterirdische Bahnhof Potsdamer Platz im Nordsüdtunnel eröffnet wurde. Im Februar 1945 ging der Potsdamer Bahnhof nach Kriegsschäden außer Betrieb. Nach Kriegsende wurde ein Teil des Ringbahnhofs kurzzeitig bis 1946 noch einmal für den Vorortverkehr genutzt. Der dem Personenbahnhof vorgelagerte Güterbahnhof blieb noch teilweise während der Berliner Teilung in Betrieb. Mittlerweile sind alle Bahnanlagen und Hochbauten abgetragen.
