Arthur Thomas Ippen (July 28, 1907 – April … Arthur Thomas Ippen (July 28, 1907 – April 5, 1974) was a noted hydrologist and engineer and was an Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Born to German parents, he attended high school and college in Aachen, Germany graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1931. He then took an Institute of International Education scholarship to study at the University of Iowa but after his doctoral advisor, , died suddenly, Ippen transferred to Caltech to complete his Ph.D. His doctoral work, supervised by Theodore von Kármán and , explored sediment transport and open-channel high-velocity flows and represented the first American development of sonic wave analogy to free-surface flow. Ippen's took his first faculty appointment at Lehigh University in 1938 and remained there until he accepted a position at MIT in 1945. While at MIT, he took over the existing Hydrodynamics Laboratory and built up a research program of staff graduate students examining the , transient flows, instrumentation, turbulence, cavitation, shoaling waves, stratified flow, and sediment transport. The laboratory eventually expanded and became the . Ippen served as the President of the , was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in April 1967 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and also received honorary doctorates from the University of Toulouse, University of Karlsruhe, and the University of Manchester. He married Elizabeth Wagenplatz while at Caltech and had two children, Erich Peter and Karen Ann. Erich P. Ippen is a professor of electrical engineering and physics at MIT and a fellow member of the National Academy of Engineering. April 1974 in Belmont (Massachusetts)) war ein deutsch-US-amerikanischer Ingenieurwissenschaftler für Hydrodynamik. Er war Professor am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Ippen war der Sohn deutscher Eltern und studierte Bauingenieurwesen in Aachen mit dem Diplom 1931. Danach war er ein Jahr Assistent in der Abteilung Geodäsie in Aachen und ging dann mit einem des Institute of International Education zum Auslandsstudium in die USA zuerst an die University of Iowa, um zu promovieren. Nachdem sein Doktorvater Floyd Nagler starb ging er an das Caltech, wo er 1935 seinen Master-Abschluss erhielt und 1936 bei Theodore von Karman und promovierte. Die Dissertation war über Strömung in offenen Kanälen bei hoher Geschwindigkeit mit Sedimenttransport und er verfolgte darin auch eine Analogie von Stoßwellen bei Strömungen mit freier Oberfläche. Danach war er zwei Jahre Instructor und Forschungsingenieur am Caltech und lehrte ab 1938 als Instructor und ab 1939 als Assistant Professor an der Lehigh University (wo er sich mit dem Einfluss der Viskosität von Flüssigkeiten auf Zentrifugalpumpen befasste) bevor er 1945 als Associate Professor an das MIT ging, wo er 1948 Professor wurde. Dort baute er als Direktor das Hydrodynamik-Labor aus, für das 1950 ein neues Gebäude eingeweiht wurde (ab 1970 nach einer größeren Erweiterung Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory for Water Resources and Hydrodynamics). Er wurde Ford Professor am MIT und schließlich Institute Professor (die oberste Auszeichnung am MIT). 1973 ging er offiziell in den Ruhestand. Er forschte über transiente Strömungen, Turbulenz, Kavitation, Sedimenttransport, geschichtete Strömung, Instrumentation in Experimenten zur Hydrodynamik und Wellen.
