Antoine Laurent Jessé Bayle (13 January 17 … Antoine Laurent Jessé Bayle (13 January 1799 – 29 March 1858) was a French physician known for first describing paralytic dementia. He was born in Le Vernet, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and was a nephew to pathologist Gaspard Laurent Bayle (1774–1816). Bayle studied medicine in Paris, and worked as an intern under Antoine-Athanase Royer-Collard (1768–1825) at the Charenton mental asylum. Later he became an associate professor and deputy librarian of the Faculté de Médecine de Paris. He resigned from this position in 1834 and opened a private practice. In 1822 Bayle was the first physician to provide a comprehensive description of general paresis, which is sometimes referred to as paralytic dementia, general paralysis of the insane, or "maladie de Bayle" in medical literature. In 1824 he founded the journal Revue médicale, and from 1828 to 1837 was publisher of the multi-volume Bibliothèque de thérapeutique (Library of Therapeutics).e thérapeutique (Library of Therapeutics).

Il était le neveu de Gaspard Laurent Bayle et est resté célèbre pour avoir le premier décrit en 1822 la paralysie générale (ou neurosyphilis). Cette découverte aura une importance majeure dans l'évolution de la psychiatrie vers les thèses organogénétiques de la maladie mentale, toutefois Bayle n'a pas soupçonné le rôle de la syphilis dans l'apparition de cette pathologie d'allure psychiatrique. Professeur agrégé et sous-bibliothécaire de la Faculté de médecine de Paris, il fonda en 1824 la Revue médicale et publia lui-même quelques ouvrages estimés au XIXe siècle, sur les maladies mentales, l'anatomie et la pathologie médicale entre autres la Bibliothèque de thérapeutique, 1828-1837, 4 volumes in-8. Nachdem er im Hôpital de la Charité unter Laennec gearbeitet hatte, ging er zu Antoine-Athanase Royer-Collard in das psychiatrische Krankenhaus in Charenton-le-Pont bei Paris. Dort sammelte er Beobachtungen für seine 1822 verteidigte Promotion über die Entzündung der mittleren Hirnhaut. Bayle beschrieb in seinen Recherches sur l'arachnitis chronique 1822 als Erster die histologischen Veränderungen an den Gehirnen von an Neurolues verstorbenen Patienten. Das Spätstadium der Neurolues, die progressive Paralyse, wurde nach ihm auch als Bayle-Krankheit benannt. 1824 wurde er zum beigeordneten Bibliothekar, 1827 zum außerordentlichen Professor („agrégé“) der medizinischen Fakultät ernannt.
