, The Analatos Painter was an Attic vase pai … The Analatos Painter was an Attic vase painter of the Early Proto-Attic style. The name of the Analatos Painter is derived from the central Attic area of (today Nea Smyrni), where several of his works have been excavated. His name vase is a hydria. His period of activity is estimated to be similar to that of the Mesogeia Painter, between c. 700 and 675 BC. It is possible that the Analatos Painter was also a potter. The Analatos Painter belongs to the transition from Late Geometric to Early Proto-Attic vase painting. He is thought to have been a pupil of the Late Geometric . The earliest works ascribed to him are still within a clear Late Geometric tradition. For example, one of his Geometric hydriai depicts a prothesis (laying-out of a body), showing Egyptian influences. The adoption of eastern influences was a key feature of the subsequent Orientalising Period, of which the Analatos Painter was one of the main early proponents. Characteristic of this new style were fantastic animals, sphinxes without wings or faces, rows of dancing men or women, cable patterns and rosettes. His oldest known amphora, now in the Ashmolean Museum shows a row of two-horsed chariots on its belly, as does a loutrophoros in the Louvre and several other pieces. In the execution of detail, he frequently followed older precepts. Besides amphorae and hydriai, he also painted kraters, bowls and lids. Seine Schaffensperiode wird, wie die seines Zeitgenossen Mesogeia-Maler, etwa zwischen 700 und 675 v. Chr. angesetzt. Der Name des Analatos-Maler ist nicht überliefert. Seinen Notnamen bekam er nach dem attischen Gebiet (heute Nea Smyrni), wo man mehrere seiner Werke bei archäologischen Grabungen fand. Bei seiner Namenvase handelt es sich um eine Hydria. Er steht am Übergang vom geometrischen zum frühprotoattischen Stil. Er gilt als Schüler des spätgeometrischen Stathatou-Malers. Die ersten ihm zugeschriebenen Werke führte er noch in der älteren Technik aus. So zeigte er auf einer geometrisch verzierten Hydria eine ägyptisch beeinflusste Prothesis. Dieser Einfluss des Orients sollte für den folgenden protoattischen (den sogenannten orientalisierenden) Stil, für den der Künstler einer der Hauptvertreter ist, prägend sein. Kennzeichnend für den neuen Stil waren Fabeltiere, Sphingen, bei denen Gesichter und Flügel ausgespart waren, sich locker bewegende Männer- und Frauenreigen, Kabelmuster und Rosetten. Seine älteste bekannte Amphora (heute in Oxford) wird in der Bauchzone von einer Reihe von Zweigespannen – ähnliche Darstellungen finden sich beispielsweise auch auf einer Loutrophore im Louvre – geziert. In vielen Details bleibt der Maler noch dem alten Stil verpflichtet. Neben Amphoren und Hydrien verzierte er auch Kratere, Schüsseln und Deckel. Möglicherweise war er neben seinem Wirken als Vasenmaler auch Töpfer. Ein dem Maler zugeschriebenes Votivtäfelchen ist mit Resten einer Inschrift (ΣΟΝΟΣΈΓΙΣΤ, sonos epist) versehen, was für die Schreibkundigkeit des Malers spricht.
