Mai 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah) ist ein US-amerikanischer Informatiker und Unternehmer sowie Mitentwickler von WordPerfect und einer der beiden Gründer der zugehörigen gleichnamigen Softwarefirma. Er war Professor an der Brigham Young University. Ashton studierte Informatik und Musik an der University of Utah. In den 1970er Jahren war er Professor an der Brigham Young University, wo er mit seinem Studenten das Wortverarbeitungsprogram WordPerfect entwickelte und 1979 dafür eine Firma (Satellite Software International, später WordPerfect Corporation) gründete. 1987 gab er seine Professur ganz auf und wurde Präsident und CEO der Firma. Die Firma wurde von Ashton, Bastian (die jeweils rund die Hälfte der Aktien hielten) und Pete Peterson geleitet. Nach der Übernahme von WordPerfect durch Novell 1994 gehörte er bis 1996 dem Board of Directors von Novell an. 1999 gründete er die Risikokapitalgesellschaft ASH Capital. Mit seiner Frau gründete er Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, ein kommunales Zentrum mit schulischen Aktivitäten, einem Museum und Golfplatz. Mit seiner Ehefrau Karen Ashton hat er elf Kinder. Er ist Mormone und arbeitete in seiner Jugend als Missionar der Kirche in Deutschland. 2004 bis 2006 war er Missions-Präsident der Kirche in West-Ontario.
