, The 1939 German football championship, the … The 1939 German football championship, the 32nd edition of the competition, was won by Schalke 04, the club's fourth German championship, by defeating Admira Wien 9–0 in the final, with Ernst Kalwitzki scoring five goals. For Admira it was the club's only appearance in the German championship while the 9–0 result was the highest winning margin for any of the finals held between 1903 and 1963, surpassing VfB Leipzig's 7–2 victory over DFC Prag in the inaugural 1903 final. For Schalke, it continued the club's most successful era, having won the 1934, 1935 and 1937 final and going on to win the 1940 and 1942 ones as well. Schalke's Ernst Kalwitzki was the 1939 championships top scorer with eleven goals, having previously finished as the top scorer in 1937. The eighteen 1938–39 Gauliga champions, two more than in 1938 because of the addition of the Gauliga Ostmark after the Anschluss and the Gauliga Sudetenland after the Munich Agreement, competed in a group stage with the four group winners advancing to the semi-finals. The two semi-final winners then contested the 1939 championship final. The groups were divided into three with four clubs and one with six clubs with the latter, in turn, subdivided into two groups of three teams each and a final of these group winners to determine the over all group champions. Het was het laatste seizoen voor het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Duitsland was intussen wel groter geworden. In maart 1938 werd Oostenrijk bij Duitsland aangesloten en na het Verdrag van München in september van dat jaar werd ook Sudetenland geannexeerd. Beide gebieden kregen een eigen Gauliga zodat er nu 18 Gauliga's waren. Oostenrijk werd de Gauliga Ostmark. Door deze uitbreiding werd ook de competitie hervormd. Er bleven drie groepen van vier over en één groep van zes. Die groep van zes was nog eens onderverdeeld in twee groepen van drie en beide groepswinnaars bekampten elkaar nog voor een ticket voor de halve finale. De clubs uit Oostenrijk (lees: Wenen) waren bijzonder sterk. SK Rapid Wien had al de Tschammerpokal 1938 gewonnen en Admira Wien plaatste zich zowaar voor de finale om de landstitel. De finale liep voor Admira evenwel uit op een fiasco en de club kreeg een veeg uit de pan van Schalke 04, dat negen keer scoorde en zo zijn vierde landstitel binnenhaalde. Allerdings hatte die Expansionsphase des „tausendjährigen Reiches“ bereits eingesetzt. Im März 1938 war Österreich angeschlossen worden und am 29. September 1938 wurde nach dem Münchner Abkommen auch das Sudetenland annektiert, welches von der Tschechoslowakei abgetrennt wurde. Beide Gebiete wurden jeweils als neue Fußballgaue eingerichtet (Österreich unter dem Namen „Ostmark“), so dass es nunmehr 18 Gauligen und somit auch 18 Endrundenteilnehmer gab. Propagandistisch sprach man in Deutschland von der ersten „großdeutschen Meisterschaft“. Der Austragungsmodus musste aufgrund der veränderten Teilnehmerzahl leicht modifiziert werden: Die Vorrunde wurde nun in drei Gruppen mit vier Mannschaften und einer Gruppe mit sechs Mannschaften ausgetragen, wobei die Gruppe mit sechs Teams zunächst in zwei Untergruppen zu drei Mannschaften spielte und dann deren Sieger im Gruppenfinale den Gruppensieger ausspielten. Die neu hinzugekommenen Mannschaften aus Österreich (und dies bedeutete: aus Wien) waren überaus spielstark. So hatte der SK Rapid Wien bereits den Tschammerpokal 1938 gewonnen und mit dem SK Admira Wien erreichte auch auf Anhieb ein österreichisches Team das Finale um die deutsche Meisterschaft. Dort allerdings erlebten die Wiener ein Fiasko. Sie unterlagen ihrem Gegner FC Schalke 04 mit 0:9. Es war die höchste Endspielniederlage aller Zeiten und für die Gelsenkirchener der 4. deutsche Meistertitel. Auch organisatorisch änderte sich in diesem Jahr wieder etwas im deutschen Fußball. Am 21. Dezember 1938 wurde der Deutsche Reichsbund für Leibesübungen in die NSDAP eingegliedert und nannte sich fortan „Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund für Leibesübungen“ (NSRL).
